Speak Out Against War & Nukes from Hiroshima

◆This summer marks 80 years since the atomic bombings; we are at a crossroads whether or not to allow a new world war—a nuclear war.

◆On June 21, the US military dropped 14 of the world's largest bunker busters on Iran's underground nuclear facilities. “That hit ended the war,” Trump told reporters. “. . . an example of Hiroshima, . . . an example of Nagasaki, but that was essentially the same thing.” While justifying the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he praised himself for the massive bombing of the Iranian nuclear facilities. The Japanese government tolerated this, and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui did not protest against Trump’s abusive remarks, but only said, “I wish President Trump would visit Hiroshima.” Meanwhile, he is enforcing “restrictions on entry to the Peace Park” to exclude workers, students, and citizens, including atomic bomb survivors and their second generation, who are trying to raise their voices against war and nuclear weapons on August 6 this year. We will never allow this outrageous move.

◆The Ukraine war, the genocide in Gaza, the bombing of Iran. . . as the flames of war spread across the world, the US, European, Japanese and other governments are competing to build up their military. The biggest source of a new world war, a nuclear war, is the clash between American imperialism and China over Taiwan. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth threatened China at the Asia Pacific Security Conference on May 31, “We will be prepared to . . . fight (China) and win—decisively.” Japan is working together with the US to set up a joint operational system against China regarding the whole of East Asia as a “one-theater.” The construction of missile bases and military fortifications in the Okinawa-Ryukyu Archipelago, the strengthening of Iwakuni base, and the construction of a “multi-functional composite defense base” in Kure—all of these are being promoted as part of a plan to turn the whole of Japan into a battlefield, a launching point for an invasion of China.

◆This war will end up in a nuclear war. The US is investing an average of more than 10 trillion yen every year in the development of new nuclear weapons, and Russia and China are counteracting against it. It is now said, “the world has entered a new era of nuclear arms race,” and also in Japan, former high-ranking government officials and former Self-Defense Force top officers have proposed that the Three Non-Nuclear Principles be amended and American nuclear weapons be deployed in Japan.

◆Now is the time to stop a new world war, a nuclear war! Led by second and third generation atomic bomb survivors and young people, students and women who have inherited the anger and struggle of the atomic bomb survivors on the forefront , we will rise up in the August 6 Hiroshima Grand Action, on the 80th Hiroshima A-bomb Day. Let’s stand in solidarity with the people in China, Asia and the world, and raise our voices and take action together!
